A verruca is a small and rough skin lesion often found on the sole of the foot.
They are caused by the human papilloma virus – short HPV.
If the skin is cracked due to excessive moisture or dryness, the virus is able to enter the skin and plant a verruca. Most verrucaes are caught in communal areas where people are barefoot, for example, in changing rooms or swimming pools. It is therefore advisable to wear flip flops in such places in order to prevent contamination.
It is important that a verruca is diagnosed because they can in some cases be mistaken for a corn. A podiatry treatment can help to get rid of either of these conditions. It is also advisable to take quick action to avoid the spreading of a verruca to the other foot or the area surrounding the wart.
There are many different type of verrucaes. In some cases they can disappear after some time, while in other cases they can stay for years and sometimes even come back.
